A man was in a northern New Mexico jail Wednesday, accused of driving drunk and leading police on a chase that finally ended with him running over himself.Roy Travis Aguilar, 21, was treated for minor injuries at a Santa Fe hospital and booked into the Sandoval County detention center on charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated, fleeing a police officer, careless driving and two other outstanding traffic warrants. The pursuit by New Mexico State Police lasted about eight minutes at speeds topping out at 78 mph, KOAT-TV in Albuquerque reported."It's weaving all over the road," one caller reported to a police tips hot line.
"This is really bad," said another.Police dash camera video captured a driver of a pickup truck who seemed to be drunk, weaving all over the road."I can say that this is the worst that I've dealt with," said officer Grace Romero. At first it looked as though the driver was pulling over, but then he quickly changed his mind and took off, according to police."I don't think he even knew I was in the back of him in the beginning when he first took off," Romero said.As speeds approached 80 mph, the truck barely missed another car. After leading the officer off the road, Aguilar stopped his car, got out and fell underneath it, police said. The front tire rolled over his ankle and leg.Romero stopped the rolling truck and helped the driver. She said she found alcohol in the truck shortly after."I also saw 1.75 liter vodka on the seat, so I knew more or less what I had," she said.State police said they received at least three calls about the vehicle. After a blood-alcohol test, police would only describe the level as significant.
