Philadelphia, PA -- (Sports Network) - Appalachian State retained the No. 1 ranking in The Sports Network FCS Top-25 Poll, despite its 41-13 loss to defending BCS champion LSU, but its lead at the top of the poll closed. The Mountaineers received 62 of 110 first-place votes and 2,625 points after getting 97 first-place votes in the preseason poll. North Dakota State, a 41-6 winner over Austin Peay, remained second with 42 first-place votes, up from one first-place vote in the preseason poll. The Bison had 2,555 total points. James Madison, which had three first-place votes in the preseason poll, didn't have any first-place votes after losing 31-7 to Duke and fell from sixth to eighth in the new poll. There was plenty of shuffling after the opening week of action. Eastern Washington's competitive 49-24 loss at Texas Tech didn't hurt the Eagles, who remained seventh. McNeese State fell 35-27 to North Carolina and stayed 10th in the poll. Cal Poly's 29-27 victory over San Diego State lifted the Mustangs from 14th to 11th. Elon's loss to Richmond cost it two spots in the poll, the Phoenix falling from 15th to 17th. New Hampshire and Georgia Southern benefited by moving up one slot each, the Wildcats to No. 15 on an off week and Georgia Southern to No. 16 after a 45-21 loss to Georgia. Western Illinois' near upset of Arkansas caused it to rise from No. 25 to No. 18. The Leathernecks led nearly the entire game before Arkansas scored two touchdowns in the final quarter to win 28-24. Eastern Illinois slid one position from No. 18 to No. 19 following a 31-12 loss to Central Michigan. The Citadel climbed three places to No. 20 with a 54-7 victory over Webber The final five positions in the new poll are represented by South Dakota State, Villanova, Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky and Harvard.
