Alabama State Names Interim Head Football Coach

Alabama State University named Charles Coe III interim head football coach on Monday.

The 53-year-old Coe, who spent the last six seasons with the University of Memphis, has served in many capacities at several Division I-A football programs. After three years with the Tigers as running backs coach, he was promoted to assistant head coach and receivers coach in 2000.

Coe began his career in 1976 at the University of Iowa, moving on to the University of Cincinnati one year later. He subsequently spent the next 13 years with Ball State University, the University of Louisville, the University of Missouri and Kansas State.

In 1990, Coe coached receivers and running backs at the University of Tennessee, before heading to the University of Pittsburgh in 1993.

A defensive back and return specialist for Kansas State in 1970, Coe was also a standout in baseball and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the 1971 Major League Draft. He also spent part of the 1974 season in the NFL with the St. Louis Cardinals.
