No. 17 'Canes Trounce Rattlers

POSTED: 10:53 pm EDT September 9, 2006

(Sports Network) - Charlie Jones ran for 62 yards and a pair of touchdowns as 17th-ranked Miami bounced back from a season-opening loss to trounce Florida A&M, 51-10 at the Orange Bowl.

Kyle Wright was an efficient 13-of-18 for 166 yards and a touchdown, and Derron Thomas carried 11 times for 109 yards for the Hurricanes (1-1), who will look to replicate what they did in 2005, when they dropped their opener to Florida State and then reeled off eight consecutive wins.

Leon Camel threw for 143 yards on 11-of-20 passing with a touchdown, and Roosevelt Kiser had four catches for 61 yards and a score for the Rattlers (0-2).

Miami made a statement on its opening possession after taking over at its own seven-yard line. The Hurricanes proceeded to march 93 yards on 11 plays, with Jones plunging in from a yard out to give Miami an early 7-0 lead.

Jones scored his second touchdown of the game, a five-yard score, with 14:13 to play in the second quarter to cap a nine-play, 78-yard march that gave Miami a 14-0 edge.

The 'Canes embarked on another 78-yard journey, this time it took 12 plays for Miami to find pay dirt. On 2nd-and-10, Wright hooked up with Javarris James for a 21-yard TD strike and a 21-point cushion.

Wesley Taylor got the Rattlers on the board just before halftime, as his 44- yard field goal with nine seconds remaining in the second stanza made it a 21-3 game.

Wright led Miami on another lengthy touchdown drive to open the second half. A pair of 18-yard completions, one to Greg Olsen and one to Darnell Jenkins, got the ball moving, and the eight-play, 80-yard drive culminated in a 20-yard TD jaunt by Tyrone Moss, putting the Hurricanes ahead 28-3.

James three-yard TD run put Miami up 35-3 with 9:28 to go in the third before Florida A&M found the end zone for the first time. Camel connected with Kiser on a seven-yard scoring pass to make it a 35-10 game midway through the third.

Back-up quarterback Kirby Freeman got in on the action at the end of the third as he hit Jerrell Mabry for a five-yard touchdown pass that gave Miami a 42-10 advantage.

After the Hurricanes recorded a safety with 5:03 to go in the fourth, Matt Perrelli crossed the goal line from a yard out to cap the scoring.
