NCAA Game Summary - North Carolina At Duke

POSTED: 8:53 pm EST November 29, 2008

(Sports Network) - A late interception in the red zone by Trimane Goddard sealed the North Carolina Tar Heels' 28-20 ACC win over the rival Duke Blue Devils.

UNC (8-4, 4-4 ACC) quarterback T.J. Yates, who missed five games with a broken left ankle, won as a starter for the first time since Sept. 11 at Rutgers. Yates finished with 190 yards and three touchdowns, after starting the day by completing 15 of his first 16 passes. Shaun Draughn carried 29 times for 110 yards and a TD.

Thaddeus Lewis, who missed last week's game with a foot injury, returned to the Duke (4-8, 1-7) lineup and completed 34-of-49 passes for 278 yards and a touchdown.

The Blue Devils drove right down the field on their opening possession, with Eron Riley hauling in an eight-yard touchdown pass from Lewis to take an early 7-0 lead.

But UNC answered with a 10-play, 73-yard drive, capped by Draughn's four-yard touchdown run.

The Duke defense got in on the action, as Vincent Rey scooped up a fumble and returned it 36 yards to put the Blue Devils ahead, 14-7.

But the Tar Heels tied it back up later in the quarter, as Yates hooked up with Draughn for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

UNC took its first lead at the 4:28 mark of the second quarter, when Hakeem Nicks caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Yates.

But the Duke offense was able to run down the clock in the first half, and Joe Surgan came on to kick a 55-yard field goal as time expired.

Duke kicker Nick Maggio chipped a 27-yarder through the uprights at the 4:59 mark of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 21-20.

But UNC's Richard Quinn provided the dagger with a 32-yard touchdown reception from Yates with 1:16 remaining in the third, and the Tar Heels defense held strong the rest of the way.

The UNC offense was able to consistently move the chains by converting 11- of-16 third downs for the game.
