Richmond, VA -- Jerome Felton ran for 92 yards and had two touchdowns as the Furman Paladins defeated the Richmond Spiders, 24-20, in a Division I-AA quarterfinal at UR Stadium. Ingle Martin went 17-of-25 for 249 yards and one touchdown and Justin Stepp hauled in 11 catches for 143 yards for the Paladins (11-2), who have won four straight games. They move on to play Appalachian State in the semifinals next Saturday. Stacy Tutt went 15-of-30 for 153 yards and two scores and also ran for 102 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown for the Spiders (9-4), who had an eight- game winning streak snapped. The Spiders took a 7-0 lead on their first possession of the game. Tutt hit Joseph Stewart in the back of the end zone on a 15-yard strike just 2:02 into the game. The Paladins answered with a touchdown drive of their own. Martin hit Daric Carter in the flat on the left side and he broke a tackle on his way to an 18- yard score 5:21 in. Richmond, however, came right back and Tutt's four-yard quarterback sneak with 4:09 left in the first quarter made it a 14-7 game. Furman would take the lead for good with 10 points in the second quarter. Felton's two-yard run tied the game up with 6:10 left in the half and Scott Beckler hit a 36-yard field goal with 1:07 left to give Furman a 17-14 lead going into the locker room. The Paladins increased their lead to 10 points when Felton took the ball into the end zone from one yard out with 8:19 left in the third quarter. However, Tutt connected with Ben Teufel for a 10-yard touchdown, but the extra point attempt failed when the holder fumbled the ball with 8:20 to go in the game. Richmond had one last chance, but on 4th-and-2 Tutt's pass to Matt Hale was incomplete and Furman escaped with the victory.
