Huntsville, TX -- (Sports Network) - Former University of Oklahoma starting quarterback Rhett Bomar learned that he will be eligible to play for the Division I-AA Sam Houston State Bearkats for the 2007 season on Wednesday."I am happy to get this behind me," said Bomar. "I look forward to having the opportunity to represent Sam Houston State. Right now, my top priority is seeing this team win some football games. This decision today will help take the focus off me and put the focus on the team." In a release issued by Oklahoma after an internal investigation in 2006, Bomar among others received extra compensation above that to which they were entitled related to their employment at a private business. In order to try and avoid further NCAA sanctions, the school declared the players ineligible and refused to allow him to return to the team. Bomar, who has two years of eligibility remaining, started 10 of 12 games played in 2005, completing 167-of-308 passes for 2,018 yards with 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. "Rhett has fit in well with the team here at Sam Houston," said head coach Todd Whitten. "Obviously, we would have liked for him to able to play in games this season. But, with his experience working with the squad this fall and spring training ahead next year, we look forward to having him as a Bearkat for the next two seasons." "Our concern at this time is for Rhett Bomar and his family. After more than two months of uncertainly, we are ready to bring closure to this situation," said Sam Houston State director of athletics Bobby Williams. "Since Rhett choose to come to Sam Houston State, our goal has been to do everything we can to assist Rhett in continuing his education and athletic career."
