One person is dead after a small airplane crashed as it tried to land at an airport in the northern Atlanta suburbs.

The victim was identified as Max Gysin, 66, of Kennesaw, who was killed when his plane crashed into the woods between two lots in a residential area near Kennesaw's arboretum. No one else was injured.

Gysin, who operated a small motel chain, was returning from Vero Beach, Fla., after making a stop in Albany, his wife, Jean, said.

Kathleen Bergen, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the Socata TBM 700 single-engine aircraft was registered to Flying Max LLC based in Vero Beach.

The aircraft was on final approach to land at McCollum Field, within a half-mile of the crash site, said county spokesman Robert Quigley.
