DeKalb To Host Prostate Screening

POSTED: 2:18 pm EDT July 23, 2008

DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Vernon Jones and the Board of Commissioners partnered with the Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia, The DeKalb County Board of Health and Oakhurst Medical Centers to host free, non-invasive prostate cancer screenings for men ages 40 years and older.

The two-day event will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2008 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Public Safety Headquarters (Fire Side) located on 1950 West Exchange Place in Tucker and Thursday, July 24, 2008 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Tax Commissioners Building located at 4380 Memorial Drive in Decatur.

The TRIM (Teach Reach Inform Men) Initiative will offer a simple, non-invasive, 30-second blood test called a PSA to screen for prostate cancer.

The PSA test should be done annually for every man beginning at age 50, African-American men starting at age 40 and men with a family history of this disease starting at age 40.

"This is an excellent opportunity for men in our community to get the tools they need to lead a healthy life," said Jones.

"In DeKalb, we are concerned about the quality of life for all our citizens and our men are especially important in setting the example for our families."

The screenings are free and open to all who wish to attend.
