KINGSLAND, Ga. -- Kingsland will celebrate highlights of its history Aug. 6 with a 100th anniversary observance.Elnora Dawson-Kelly, however, is not one of Kingsland's residents who needs a history lesson -- she lived it.Now 102 years old, Dawson-Kelly was a toddler when the area known as King's Land, named after property owner William Henry King, was incorporated as a city in 1908.She said she remembers riding to town in a horse and buggy on a dirt road that is now Georgia 40. She knew King, who was the city's first mayor.
"There were just a few houses. They didn't have lights or electricity. We used lanterns after dark," she said.Land was $4 an acre, a slab of bacon was 25 cents and a one-way train ticket to Bradenton, Florida, to visit relatives was $5.50.Darren Harper, the city's economic development director, said one of the highlights of the birthday bash will be the burial and marking of a time capsule. The time capsule will contain memorabilia such as copies of the original map of the city's boundaries and a new map showing its growth. It will also hold photographs, old and current news articles, receipts for common items such as a gallon of milk, gasoline and a city water bill. The time capsule will be opened in 50 years.
