Austin, Texas, is the hardest-drinking major city in the U.S., according to a report in Forbes magazine.

Slideshow: Hardest-Drinking Cities

The publication looked at how many people in the cities said they had a drink in the last month, how many binge drink and how many have more than two drinks a day. The data was based on surveys coordinated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Austin is known for its live music scene and massive festivals, as well as the University of Texas, one of the largest schools in the country. A bar manager said that Sixth Street there is a miniature version of New Orleans' Bourbon Street.

In Austin, 61.5 percent of adults said they have had a drink in the last month, and one in five said they binge drink.

Austin was followed in the top 5 by:

  • Milwaukee
  • San Francisco
  • Providence, R.I.
  • Chicago
  • The magazine ranked the top 15 cities.
