Rays Activate Star Rookie Longoria

POSTED: 5:17 pm EDT September 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays activated rookie third baseman Evan Longoria from the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

Longoria, the odds-on favorite to win the AL Rookie of the Year award this year, has been sidelined since August 8 with a fractured right wrist, caused from being hit by a pitch.

The first-year star will not immediately be in the Rays' lineup, but rather used as a pinch-runner or defensive replacement.

The 22-year-old All-Star hit .278 with 22 home runs, 71 RBI, 27 doubles and a .533 slugging percentage in 104 games prior to the injury. He had not missed a contest since his major-league debut back on April 12.
