DORAVILLE, Ga. -- Doraville's mayor reinstated the city's police chief Wednesday, one day after the chief was let go by the city council. The decision by Mayor Ray Jenkins was announced by Police Chief John King's attorney Wednesday.J. Tom Morgan said he and King met with Jenkins Wednesday morning. Morgan said they agreed the council members did not go through the proper channels of firing King.Jenkins reinstated King, effective immediately, Morgan said.
The vote to fire King happened around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday during a closed-door session.Three of the five council members voted to fire King, who became chief in 2002.Council member Marlene Hadden called the firing "personal and petty."Hadden said King was criticized for taking time off from his job to serve in Iraq. In December 2004, King was dispatched to train for Iraq. He was named commander of Georgia's 1st Battalion, 108th Armor Regiment in Baghdad six months later.
