UPDATED: 11:44 am EDT August 20, 2007

A man armed with a gun who kept police at bay at his Alpharetta home for almost 12 hours surrendered Monday morning.

The incident began around 9:15 p.m. Sunday night at the home on Birch Hollow Drive.

Police said they received a telephone call from a man saying his 17-year-old son had been assaulted.

When police arrived at the home, they made contact with William Garnett, 49.

A police spokesman said when officers tried to arrest Garnett, he resisted arrest and slammed the front door. According to officers, Garnett then yelled to his wife “Go get my gun.”

Garnett’s wife, who police identified as Lindy Garnett, was able to leave the house safely.

Police said around 7:30 a.m., Garrett came out of his garage.

Upon seeing officers, Garrett tried to run back into his house, police said. But officers caught up to Garrett and tasered him. Garrett was then taken into custody.
