Doraville Council To Explain Chief's Firing

UPDATED: 8:19 am EDT August 20, 2007

Members of the Doraville City Council are expected to explain Monday why they fired the city’s police chief.

Police Chief John King was fired earlier this month, but was later reinstated by Doraville Mayor Ray Jenkins.

Council member Marlene Hadden called the firing “personal and petty."

She said the council had criticized King for taking time off to serve in Iraq. In December 2004, King was dispatched to train for Iraq. He was named commander of Georgia's 1st Battalion, 108th Armor Regiment in Baghdad six months later.

King became police chief in 2004.
