MARIETTA, Ga. -- One of the so-called "Barbie Bandits" appeared in a Cobb County Superior Court Wednesday to plead guilty to charges relating to a bank heist, but the judge decided not to sentence her.Nineteen-year-old Heather Johnston entered the pleas to theft by taking -- a felony -- and misdemeanor marijuana possession during a hearing in Cobb County Superior Court. She told Judge Mary Staley that she regrets what she did and wishes every day that she could take it back. She cried as she said she was making the non-negotiated guilty pleas because she wants to take responsibility for what she did.
The judge said told Johnston that she may remain on bond for now until the cases against other people charged in the heist are resolved. She must continue to wear an ankle monitor. Her trial was scheduled to begin Oct. 10.Investigators said Johnston and Ashley Miller were part of a bank theft in which nearly $11,000 was taken. Miller is charged with felony theft by taking, marijuana possession and ecstasy trafficking. The theft occurred Feb. 27 at the Bank of America service center in a Kroger store in Acworth. Surveillance cameras recorded the two teens wearing sunglasses and smiling as they handed a teller a note demanding cash.Police also charged a bank teller and another man, saying it appeared to be an inside job because of the amount of money involved.Authorities said Miller and Johnston went on a shopping spree, ate a meal and even gave money to the homeless afterward. She has been free on a $10,000 bond since Mar. 31.
