AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Sheriff's deputies continued their efforts Tuesday to get murder warrants against two teens accused in a bizarre incident that killed their father.Deputies say one of the two boys threw a metal tent pole at their father's head, fatally injuring him.Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten said Tony Powell Sr., 39, of Augusta, died Monday at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital. Powell had been undergoing treatment there since the Oct. 23 incident.Sheriff's Investigator Tom Johnson said the 15-and 16-year-old sons got into a confrontation with Powell over his drinking and drug use. When the father attempted to drive away, the older son threw the pole through the open window of his father's vehicle, hitting him in the head, Johnson said.
Last week, the 16-year-old spoke to WRDW-TV. "All it was was an accident. When I threw the pole the back of the truck was facing us and then he spun the truck around and that's how it hit him. I just wanted my dad to be okay. I love him and I'm sorry," he said. The son was originally charged as a juvenile with aggravated assault, but Johnson said Tuesday that both teens may be charged with murder.
