UPDATED: 3:45 pm EST January 4, 2008

The incident that ended with two Gwinnett County police officers being shot Thursday night began at a DUI checkpoint, sources tell CBS 46 News.

The sources said William Shable Caram, 37, refused to get out of his car and nearly ran over several officers as he fled.

Officers later tracked Caram to a home on White Cedar Terrace in Suwanee.

When they tried to serve an arrest warrant on him, police said Caram opened fire on officers with a rifle.

Authorities have identified the officers. The officer who required surgery was Sgt. Michael P. McKeithan. He was shot in the chest and back. The second officer was identified as Cpl. William M. Hoch, who was shot in the leg.

According to dispatchers, officers pulling up to the location were able to pull the officers to safety.
