Police: We Have 'Strong Leads' In Case

AUBURN, Ala. -- Murdered Auburn student Lauren Burk was not sexually assaulted, police officials said at a press conference Friday afternoon.Burk was found wounded on Alabama Highway 147 around 9 p.m. Tuesday, and Auburn police said her Honda Civic was found engulfed in flames at the campus about 20 minutes later. She was taken to a hospital, where she died Tuesday night.Police officials also said they found a gas can in downtown Auburn. They did not say how the can was related to the case, but they said they are checking the can for potential evidence.Earlier Friday, Burk's family asked for privacy, even as police look for her killer.
The family issued a written statement Friday family friend Kathy Singleton.The statement expressed gratitute for what it called "all the kindness and prayers expressed during this tragedy." The statement said the family asks for privacy to grieve for their loss and to celebrate Lauren's life.To read Gov. It says anyone interested may contact any Wachovia Bank office and make a contribution to the "Lauren Burk Memorial Fund."Memorial services for Burk were announced Thursday.The first memorial will be held Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta.A second service will be held Sunday at 5:30 pm. at the Kol Emeth Synogogue on Old Canton Road in Marietta.An on-campus memorial will be held at Auburn on Monday at 3 p.m. at the Samford Lawn.
