UPDATED: 8:34 am EDT May 12, 2008

The top of a tree snapped in gusty winds, fell and killed a woman walking at the entrance of a Gwinnett County apartment complex Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.

Gwinnett Fire Capt. Thomas Rutledge said the woman, who was identified as Astrid Hidalgo, 19, was dead when firefighters arrived at the Chatelaine Park Apartments in Duluth just before 5 p.m.

"Everybody loved her, everybody. She was goofy, she made you smile," said Trixsy Hidalgo, the victim's sister.

Rutledge said the tree apparently snapped due to strong winds, which were gusting as high as 45 mph.
