A police officer was injured after pushing several other people out of the way of an out-of-control car on an interstate in Michigan on Saturday, Detroit station WDIV reported.

According to Harper Woods police, an officer responded to an accident on westbound Interstate 94 near Vernier Road around 4 p.m.

While officers were investigating, another car traveling west on I-94 swerved to avoid the previous collision and struck the officer.

The 35-year-old officer said he saw the car coming and pushed several other people out of the way before he was hit.

Witnesses said the driver was traveling in the left lane of westbound I-94 when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed over three lanes of the freeway onto the embankment and hit the officer.

The officer was transported to St. John Hospital for his injuries but is expected to recover.

“It was a very incredible, heroic thing that he did,” Harper Woods Deputy Police Chief James Burke said.

The driver in the original accident was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while under the influence.

No other injuries were reported.
