JONESBORO, Ga. -- Some people in Clayton County may have noticed that their street evangelist was missing from her normal street corner.Clayton Caunty street evangelist Mary James was taken to jail for what she said was just “praying for the people.”Her prayers for the county have hardly gone unnoticed.“I guess she feels like she has something to say,” said Clayton County resident Gail Martin.
James stands in the summer heat every day saying, "This little heat is nothing compared to the heat in hell.""We need a lot of prayer here in Riverdale, we need a lot of prayer here in Clayton County," James said.Martin said "I guess she feels like she has something to say."But her preachers came with a price. She was arrested."He put the handcuffs on me, and he locked me up ad he took me to jail,” she said. The police report from Clayton County said James was “waving her arms” and “yelling at passing vehicles: when she was preaching.James was jailed for two days on charges of obstructing an officer and walking along the roadway. On resident said, "I think the arrest was ridiculous. "Leave her alone. As long as she's not bothering anyone she's fine."Clayton County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief John Gibson said James’ arrest was not due to her religion or her preaching.“She was standing in the middle of the street and she could have got run over or she could have caused an accident and that is the only reason the officer brought her to jail,” Gibson said.No court date has been set yet for James. The soliciters office will review the charges and determine whether or not to proceed. Both of the charges are misdemeanors and punishable by fine.
