Ganther, Johnson Run Titans Past Rams

POSTED: 11:59 pm EDT August 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - Kerry Collins connected on 7-of-16 passes for 105 yards and Quinton Ganther had eight rushes for 115 yards and two touchdowns, as the Tennessee Titans crushed the St. Louis Rams, 34-13, in the preseason opener for both squads.

Vince Young was 3-of-6 for 17 yards. The No. 24 overall pick in this year's draft, Chris Johnson out of East Carolina, rushed for 77 yards on six touches and scored one while adding one catch for 13 yards for the Titans (1-0). Keith Bulluck had a 13-yard interception return for a touchdown and John Vaughn was perfect on kicks as he went 2-for-2 on field goals and 4-of-4 on extra points.

Titans cornerback Nick Harper was hurt on the opening play from scrimmage with an undisclosed head injury. He walked off under his own power but did not return to the game.

Brock Berlin was 11-of-14 passing for 139 yards for the Rams (0-1). Marc Bulger hit on 3-of-9 passes, totaling 29 yards, but also had an interception in defeat. With former Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson embroiled in a contract dispute with the team and having not yet reported to training camp, Antonio Pittman led the way on the ground with six carries for 21 yards and a score and also added two catches for 16 yards. Dane Looker caught four passes for 73 yards. Josh Brown hit both his field goals and his only extra point attempt.

About midway through the opening frame, Bulluck intercepted Bulger and ran it back 13 yards for a touchdown to put the Titans up 7-0.

Both squads added field goals -- a Brown 44-yarder for the Rams and a Vaughn 48-yard kick for the Titans -- to make it 10-3 just as the second quarter was underway.

Later in the second quarter, Johnson broke a 66-yard run to give Tennessee a 17-3 lead. Pittman answered back just over a minute later with a two-yard touchdown run to pull the Rams within 17-10.

Each team connected on another field goal, and it was 20-13, Titans, heading into the break.

Ganther added two more touchdowns, a 45-yard run in the third and a two-yard score in the fourth, to put the Titans on top 34-13.
