Panthers' Moore Breaks Leg

POSTED: 7:13 pm EDT September 3, 2008

(Sports Network) - Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Moore suffered a broken left leg in practice Wednesday.

Moore was originally injured in the third quarter of the Panthers' final preseason game at Pittsburgh last week when he was hit in the leg by Steelers safety Anthony Smith. X-rays and an MRI the next day came back negative and indications were that Moore had suffered a shin contusion.

"Matt went out today and threw and felt a pop," said Panthers general manager Marty Hurney. "We did another X-ray, and it showed a fractured fibula (the smaller of the two bones in the lower leg)."

The Panthers described Moore's status as week-to-week.

"Hopefully, he can come back fairly quickly and pick up where he left off," Hurney said.

In three preseason games, Moore completed 35-of-65 passes for 389 yards with three interceptions.

To add depth at quarterback, Carolina re-signed Brett Basanez to the practice squad. Basanez had been waived by the Panthers in the final roster cutdown on Saturday.
