'Walking Dead' begins filming in Atlanta area

HAMPTON, GA (CBS46) -

Traffic is being detoured off the highway in both directions at East Main Street near the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the filming of the AMC television series, "The Walking Dead."

Many detoured drivers were unaware that crews were filming.

"They are? I didn't know that," said one woman as she passed the roadblock.

"We didn't even know what they were doing," said another driver.

The publicist for the show told CBS Atlanta that season two consists of 13 episodes that will shoot throughout the greater Atlanta area.

"Crews returned to Atlanta for a second season because Atlanta treated production crews so well," wrote Brandee Brooks in an email.

The TV series centers on zombies that overtake a city and terrorize humans that have survived the apocalypse.

The production employs approximately 160 people.

The detour began on Sunday and will be in place through 9 p.m. on Thursday, according to Kimberly Larson, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation.

The Georgia Department of Transportation advises motorists to avoid this area of SR 20 for ongoing road work.

"Now I have to make a U-turn," said Corey Britton, who was frustrated by the detour.  "I'm trying to go to the college, and now I have to make a U-turn.  It's very inconvenient."

Message boards, signs, barrels and cones will be utilized to alert and channel motorists through the detour area.
