(AP) - Seven Republican Senate hopefuls used their latest debate to trumpet their conservative credentials, even as they said their party must reach beyond their core base of supporters. ATLANTA (AP) - A city spokeswoman says a major thoroughfare on Atlanta's east side will likely be closed until early next week as crews continue attempts to repair a broken water main. The break near DeKalb Avenue and Elmira Place was first reported shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday, leading to the closure of DeKalb Avenue.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - There are concerns at the Savannah Botanical Gardens that a planned sewage treatment plant will send unpleasant smells wafting over the roses. Botanical garden chairwoman Betty Ward said about 70 percent of the funding required to maintain and operate the botanical gardens comes from weddings.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Gainesville police and state natural resources officers are investigating the drowning death of a Gainesville man in Lake Lanier. Gainesville police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook said emergency crews were called to the docks at the Chattahoochee Country Club shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday.
