Gwinnett County Schools hiring hundreds of teachers

Posted: Updated:

Gwinnett County Public Schools is ready to hire hundreds of educators.

"This is great news for Gwinnett County.  We aren't riffing, we aren't having people lose their jobs," said high school teacher Donna Aker.

Aker is thrilled the county is hiring more teachers for next year.

"Hopefully it means that the classroom will have highly qualified teachers and will have lower class sizes, and the special needs children will have the type of teachers they need to progress in the school system," Aker said.

Of the 500 teachers originally needed, over 300 have already been hired.

"The critical area for us are mathematics, science and special needs," said Gwinnett County Public School spokesman, Jorge Quintana.

Gwinnett is the state's largest school system.

Quintana said while the number of teachers needed may seem high - with over 160,000 students in the system, those numbers are a bit misleading.

"We are opening two new schools in August so that's why we deal with large numbers of folks because we are a large organization," Quintana said.

So far the district is hiring fewer teachers than last year - but that could still change.

"We also need to remember in Gwinnett we don't hire all at once, we hire throughout the whole school year," Quintana said.

As the president of Gwinnett County's Association of Educators, Aker encourages teachers to apply.

"This is a great place to work and a great place to live. I'm thrilled to be part of this system," Aker said.
