Rash of air conditioner copper pipe thefts

Fulton County police were called to Cascade Promenade strip mall in southwest Atlanta on Friday after several reports of a gas leak that prompted all the businesses to be evacuated.

Police say they discovered thieves climbed on to the roof and damaged several AC units to steal copper, which caused the leak.

"We are a small business and it's very, very damaging.  We can be out of business for good," said Roger Rajbari, manager of Little Ceasars.

At least three businesses will have no AC for the next few days and will lose customers.

Businesses owners tell CBS Atlanta it will cost more than $4,000 to repair the damaged air conditioners.

"It's absolutely frustrating especially after we find out these criminals are getting 50 to 100 bucks for the copper," said Karen Stiggers of American Family Insurance.
