State considering withholding funds from 'cheating' schools

Posted: Updated:

Officials at the Georgia Department of Education are considering trying to recoup funds given to Atlanta schools named in a cheating investigation.

All 44 of the schools named in an 800-page report made public last week are Title I Distinguished Schools, meaning they were awarded federal funds for continually improving test scores.

The Georgia D.O.E., which distributes the federal money, is considering taking that money back by withholding future funds from the schools.

A spokesman for the agency said state education officials state DOE told CBS Atlanta News that the schools have gotten nearly $1 million between 2005 and 2009, but that it would ultimately be up to State School Superintendent John Barge and the Georgia Board of Education to decide how much, if any, to recoup from the schools.
