Georgia Aquarium names mascot after icon Betty White

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Georgia Aquarium named its new dolphin mascot character "Betty" after long-time animal lover and actress Betty White.

White is known most notably for playing Rose on Golden Girls.

In February,  White appeared in a Snickers commercial during the Super Bowl and grew in popularity once again.

White began her relationship with the Aquarium in 2010 after having a life-changing experience with one of Georgia Aquarium's beluga whales, Beethoven.

After meeting Beethoven, White felt compelled to devote an entire chapter about her experience in her personal memoir, "If You Ask Me (and of Course You Won't)." In the book, she describes her encounter with Beethoven as one of the happiest and most memorable animal encounters of her life.

"Betty White truly believes in the dedicated work Georgia Aquarium does on behalf of aquatic animals," said president and COO David Kimmel. "Her commitment to supporting awareness for our research and conservation programs is remarkable, and her enthusiasm, understanding and passion for all animals make her an ideal ambassador for the zoological community."
