Teen accused of fatal sword attack to undergo a mental competency exam

The Douglas County District Attorney's office released the name of the teen accused of stabbing his great-grandmother to death.

Gevin Allen Prince, 15, appeared in court Wednesday morning. He was charged with Malice Murder and four counts of Aggravated Assault.

Under state law, he must stand trial as an adult.

Investigators said Prince murdered Mary Joan Gibbs, 77, with a samurai sword after he was told to stop playing video games.

They also said he severely injured his grandmother, Laura Prince, 55. He is also accused of chasing two neighborhood boys around with the sword when they tried to help the women. The teens were not injured.

Prince will next undergo a mental competency exam.

Douglas county Sheriff Phil Miller said he is deeply concerned about the events that led up to the violence Monday.

Miller said the teen was arrested twice before for violent behavior but later released by the juvenile justice system, despite the warning signs.

"When people act out the way he acted out, those are the red flags and if we could have got to him the first or second time, maybe, somebody, a sweet lady would still be alive today," Miller said.

"The system has failed in some way. I don't know why, but apparently because of the results it has," said Darlene Sheardon, a neighbor of the victim.

"Whether or not the system failed him, I don't know. I can't speak to that," said David McDade, District Attorney for Douglas County.

"If the system hasn't been able to deal with him so far, we're going to deal with him, and that doesn't mean turn him loose under some mental health treatment plan. He's going to be kept where he can't hurt anybody else, and I'll do whatever it takes to do that," added McDade.

Prince will remain behind bars at the Douglas County Jail.

If convicted, he does not face the death penalty.
