Mistake may have led to shooting of probation officer - CBS46 News

Funeral for probation officer killed during training

Posted: Updated:

Sources told CBS Atlanta News that the instructor who pulled the trigger, killing a probation officer, forgot to replace his real gun with a fake training gun called a "red gun."

Tiffany Bishop, 24, died at the Georgia Diagnostic Prison in Jackson on Wednesday after an instructor accidentally fired a weapon.

A source told CBS Atlanta the shooting happened inside a classroom. The source called it "a major breach of policy" since "firearms are not allowed in a training class."

Law enforcement training experts said instructors should use a red gun during classroom training. Red guns are called such because of their color.

According to a source, the instructor whose, name has not been released, forgot to replace the real gun in his holster with his red gun before returning to class after lunch.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said the GBI is investigating and will forward its findings to the Butts County district attorney and the Department of Corrections commissioner.

Bankhead said at this point the incident looks to be a "tragic accident."

Friends have tough questions about the tragedy.

"Why does that happen? We have no answers. We don't know," said Gil Gilliland.

Gilliland met Bishop as she obtained her Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.

"She was sweet; she was nice," said Gilliland choking back tears.

Friends said Bishop worked her way through school as a popular bartender but dreamed of a job in Criminal Justice. Her dreams came true this past spring when Georgia's Department of Corrections hired her.

"She was unbelievable," said Andrew Pollett, another friend.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:00 PM at Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough.
