Hundreds turn out for YSC Tour de Pink Atlanta

ALPHARETTA, GA (CBS46) -

Hundreds of breast cancer survivors and their supporters came out to raise money for breast cancer research and support at the Tour de Pink.

The event is the only bike ride to raise money for breast cancer in the area, and raised about $250,000 today. It took place at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park in Alpharetta.

Many of the survivors are well under 40 - the recommended age to start breast cancer screenings - and say that they're thankful they learned to check for signs at home.

"I may not have caught it until it had gotten much worse," said Janice Weaver, who was only 22, and three weeks away from graduating college, when she was diagnosed. "I'm very, very fortunate that I did catch it when I did."

Some who came out to the race are still going through therapy, like Kristin Labarre, 31, who is marking her one year anniversary of being cancer free on this very day.

"I didn't decide to do chemotherapy but I did surgery and radiation and I'm on a lot of medications so aside from hot flashes I'm doing really, really well," Labarre said.

She and other young survivors said support from the Young Survivors Coalition, who organized the race, has helped them get through their treatment processes.
