Spelman College celebrates National Coming Out Day

Posted: Updated:

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBT civil rights organization, will celebrate National Coming Out Day on the Spelman College campus.

On Oct. 11, 1987, half a million people participated in the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.

It was the second such demonstration in our nation's capital and resulted in the founding of a number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organizations.

National Coming Out Day is a globally celebrated event that encourages LGBT people and their supporters to be visible by living open and honest lives and is celebrated each October 11.

Speak Out for Equality! is an inter-college event celebrating NCOD and will feature top Atlanta area businesses, community-based nonprofits, and LGBT and allied students.

The event will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the Manley Center Upper Concourse.

Activities include an exhibition fair featuring area LGBT-friendly community organizations and corporations, interspersed with personal poetic word performances, an outdoor dance party, and free ice cream.

The Human Rights Campaign bus will be parked in the Milligan parking lot.

"With each passing year National Coming Out Day takes on increased importance," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "As we celebrate major victories like marriage equality in New York and the repeal of the discriminatory ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military, it is important to remember that the more we as LGBT people tell our stories and engage others, the more victories we will achieve"

In addition to the Speak Out for Equality! event, HRC's NCOD campaign engages participants through a Facebook application that offers users a number of options to show their support for LGBT equality.
