Atlanta woman says local locksmith ripped her off

Posted: Updated:

An Atlanta woman is claiming a local locksmith took advantage of her.

Hollie Holler hired Atlanta Midtown Locksmith last week when she locked her keys in her car. She said she felt like the company charged her too much when they charged $232 to unlock her Oldsmobile Alero.

"The business that I contacted is very shady," Holler said.

CBS Atlanta News began investigating the company that Holler had hired and we learned that there were several different locksmith's listed online with the same phone number as Atlanta Midtown Locksmith.

"He held my debit card up and said he needed to take a photograph of my card with his personal cell phone," Holler said.

Jack Wynn, President of the Georgia Locksmith Association, told CBS Atlanta News that the company Holler had hired was a scam.

"These people have become masters at using Google to get their names in front of legitimate businesses in the industry," Wynn said.

So CBS Atlanta News called Atlanta Midtown Locksmith and put them to the test. We asked the company how much it would cost to unlock an Oldsmobile Alero and they gave a quote of $55. CBS Atlanta's Adam Murphy asked the locksmith Tough Questions about their business practices.

"Can you tell me why your company charged someone $232 to get the keys out of the car a week ago and you're only going to charge me $55?" Murphy asked.

"I'm a subcontractor. I don't know. I don't work directly for the company. That's a lot of money," said a locksmith with the company.
