UGA football players visit Atlanta hospitals Friday

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday, the Bulldogs take on the Yellow Jackets at Bobby Dodd Stadium, but before the big game, players with Georgia got a little inspiration from the children at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

The defensive players went room to room, signing autographs and talking to the patients about how they are feeling.

Some suffer from cancer, others debilitating diseases.  On Friday, the pain from their conditions was traded with smiles and laughter.

"Kids in this hospital really need it," said Chasidy Adams.

Adams is a heart transplant patient.  She is getting a checkup on her transplant she received in 2008.

Adams said she was shocked to see the football players going through the halls of the hospital.

"I just came from the intensive care unit and I just saw these monsters dressed in UGA clothes, it was a big surprise to me and I enjoyed it."

Adams said she is glad to inspire the players and is also amazed to see how the sick children inspire the players.

"Some kids are running and fighting for their lives, and seeing the players really helps them be inspired that they will be able to play."

"Something like this helps them understand how blessed they are," said Georgia head coach Mark Richt.  "The players can see how brave some of these young kids are and be impressed."

"It definitely inspires us,"  Garrison Smith, a defensive lineman, said.  "What we go through on the field is nothing compared to what they are going through, they are fighting for life-and-death situations right now, we are praying for them and we are real inspired to play for them."

The team members were divided in half.  The offensive players visited patients at the Shepherd Center, and the defense was at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

The visits have become a tradition for the team every other year when they play at Georgia Tech on Thanksgiving weekend.

The Bulldogs take on the Yellow Jackets on Saturday at noon.
