Woman released from hospital, driver charged in fatal accident

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A mother critically injured in a fatal car accident where her husband was killed is back home Friday night.

Sandra Walker's release from the hospital comes the same day police charged the woman accused of causing the crash with vehicular homicide.

"It's kind of like the beginning of my new life and kind of like the beginning of the life without him and figuring out what that means," Walker said.

Sandra and her husband Glen were traveling in South Fulton County with their two kids in early November when they were struck head-on. Police said driver Tamara Matthews crossed the center line and slammed into the Walker family, causing their van to flip.

Matthews' 16-year-old son died at the scene. Glen Walker later died from his injuries. Matthews is charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle in the 2nd degree and failure to maintain lane.

Walker, a kindergarten teacher in Gwinnett County, suffered a traumatic brain injury. She's learning to walk again through physical therapy.

"I don't remember being here for three weeks. I only remember about the last week," Walker said.

That's when she was able to say goodbye to the love of her life, before he was taken off life support.

"He knew that I was ok and I knew that he was ok. I could kind of trust in the Lord's plan for his life so that was important to me," Walker said.

Walker chooses not to focus on the accident that forever changed her life. Instead she has turned her energy to the time she shared with her husband.

"He just made me so happy. He's just such a good person to love because he loved so much," Walker said.

She's thankful her kids weren't hurt in the crash. They are her motivation to recover.

"I want to be able to teach them the way he loved them because he taught me so much about being a better parent and I want to continue to do those things for the kids," Walker said.

The family has set up a blog set up that chronicles Walker's recovery. Click here to see it.

There's also a place on the site where you can make a donation to help with Walker's current and future medical expenses.
