GBI: Girl's killer may live at apartment complex

CANTON, GA (CBS46) -

The person who raped and killed a little girl then tossed her body into a dumpster may live or work at the apartment complex where she was murdered, according to the director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

"Investigators feel the killer lives in the apartment complex or has access to that apartment complex," GBI Director Vernon Keenan said.  "This was a very calculated and planned crime."

Jorelys Rivera, 7, disappeared from the River Ridge Apartments in Canton last Friday. Keenan said someone snatched her from a playground.

"The child was abducted near the playground, was taken to a vacant apartment, sexually assaulted, murdered, then disposed of," Keenan said.

Investigators found Jorelys' body in a dumpster on Monday afternoon.

Some residents at the River Ridge Apartments said they were concerned that they could be living next door to a child murderer.

"It could be someone that we already know, already talked to," said resident Wildflower Dutton.

Other residents said they planned to move out now that they knew one of their neighbors may have raped and murdered the little girl.

"I don't want to be here," said resident Penny McFry. "But on the other hand, can you run?"

"We're ready to leave, there's just too much going on," said Vickie Hulsey, who also lives at the complex.

Keenan would not say why investigators thought Joreyls' killer might live or work at the complex, but he did say the agency's crime lab is examining DNA evidence left at the scene that could offer more clues on who killed her.

Investigators searched homes, conducted hundreds of interviews and followed up on a number of tips, but have none of that has led to an arrest.

The GBI announced that a $15,000 reward was being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect or suspects in Jorelys' death.

According to police, neither Jorelys' parents, nor the babysitter who was watching her at the playground, will be charged.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m.  on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Canton.

Rivera's family will hold visitation on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Darby Funeral Home.

If you have information about the Jorelys' murder, call the Sheriff's Office tip line at (770) 721-7852.
