Suspect in Jorelys Rivera's murder makes first court appearance

Posted: Updated:

A maintenance worker accused of raping and killing 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera made his first appearance in court Thursday.

Ryan Brunn, 20, was charged with murder.  The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Brunn abducted Rivera last Friday near a playground at the River Ridge Apartments in Canton where they both lived.  Brunn also worked as a maintenance man at the complex.

In court, Brunn sat quietly, listening to the judge, wearing an orange jumpsuit and bulletproof vest.

Brunn's lawyer, Darren Burns, said his client was upset about the charges, but wouldn't say whether Brunn was innocent or guilty.

The GBI said Brunn pulled the Rivera into a vacant apartment and beat, raped and stabbed her before throwing her body into a dumpster at the complex.

According to police, Brunn also worked as a maintenance man at the complex. Investigators arrested him on Wednesday afternoon after receiving tips from people at the apartment complex.

Brunn was denied bond.  He could appear again in court as early as next week.
