Jorelys Rivera's siblings back in parents' custody

Posted: Updated:

The mother of a 7-year-old Canton girl abducted and killed last week was reunited with her other two daughters Thursday afternoon.

The Department of Children and Family Services took custody of the children, ages 1 and 4, after their sister, Jorelys, went missing.

Joselinne Rivera said the reunion with her daughters was an emotional time for her.

Police said Jorelys Rivera, who was last seen Friday leaving a playground at her Canton apartment complex, was sexually assaulted, stabbed and beaten to death. Her body was found Monday.

A maintenance worker at the apartments, 20-year-old Ryan Brunn, faces a murder charge.

A DFACS spokesman said the agency investigated the family in February after charges the children had a lack of supervision.

An 85-page report on the Rivera family said Jorelys twice got off the school bus and no adult was there to meet her.

"We determined that it was important for us to put a safety plan in place so the mother understood the importance of having adult supervision with her children as it relates to the bus stop," said Lisa Marie Shekell of the Department of Human Services, which oversees DFACS.

The agency also inspected the family's home in February to make sure there was no neglect.

"When we arrived at the home, we found that there was food in the refrigerator," Shekell told CBS Atlanta.  "The children were clean.  We also looked to see if there were any signs of child abuse or maltreatment, and none of those things were identified."

While the two younger daughters were returned to their mother Thursday, DFACS said it could not comment on the case for confidentiality reasons.

Jorelys' mother said she was looking forward to going home and spending time with her two young daughters.
