Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

On January 9, 2011, winter weather moved into Metro Atlanta.

Georgia declared a state of emergency, and authorities closed schools and government offices across the state.

The Department of Public Works and city-hired private contractors worked 12-hour shifts to clear major streets and side streets throughout the city, although interstates and surface streets remained icy for days.

In Atlanta, 278 accident reports were filed.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was virtually at a standstill at the onset of the storm and, while MARTA train service continued to run, bus service halted.
