Accused baby snatcher denied bond

Posted: Updated:

The teen accused of trying to kidnap a baby girl from a Clayton County hospital was denied bond after her court appearance Thursday afternoon.

The judge said the charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment against Naquelle Ballard, 19, are just too serious to let her out.

"Miss Ballard, do you know what you're charges are," the judge asked.

"Yes sir," Ballard said.

The incident happened just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Women's Life Center at Southern Regional Hospital in Riverdale.

Police arrested Ballard a short time later in Lake City and took her to the Clayton County Jail.

"You were apprehended after fleeing the scene. Because of that nature of the seriousness of the charges and the nature of the circumstances surrounding you fleeing the scene, the court has denied you bond on these charges at this time," the judge said.

Police said Ballard dressed in hospital scrubs to gain access to the hospital. When she tried to leave with the baby, an alarm sensor went off and doors locked. They said Ballard then set the baby down so the doors would open and she could flee the hospital. Workers rescued the baby.

Amanda Bartlett, a spokeswoman for the hospital, said she couldn't describe how the system worked, for security reasons.

"We as an organization are very pleased that not only did the security system work but our employees stepped in. Everything went according to plan," Bartlett said. "The baby's fine and she's with mom."

"You're at the hospital, hoping to be protected and safe, and for someone to even come remotely close to doing that, it's just a shock," said Ballard's neighbor Rebecca Brinson.

Neighbors told CBS Atlanta they saw police take a baby seat out of an SUV parked at her home. The judge said Ballard fled the hospital in a black Expedition. Neighbors said they still can't believe the events that unfolded.

"It's just a shock that someone that young is capable of something like that, someone at all is capable of something like that," Brinson said.

According to Ballard's Twitter page she is pregnant.

Ballard recently tweeted, "I'm putting childish things away, cus I got a child on the way."

Ballard's next court date is Jan. 17. She is eligible for a court-appointed attorney.
