Union City Police release statement on officer involved shooting

Posted: Updated:

Supporters of a teen, shot dead by a Union City police officer, plan a rally this week. They don't believe a newly-released statement from police about what happened.

The shooting happened Dec. 14th at the Hickory Park subdivision. Union City Police said officers had been dispatched to the neighborhood on a call about shots being fired and a possible fight in progress.

The statement, released Sunday night, read, in part:

"Upon arriving at the scene of the fight, officers observed a large crowd in the street and an unidentified subject, later identified as (Ariston) Waiters, fleeing the scene. Several witnesses to the fight advised officers the subject fleeing had fired the shots. Our officer gave chase and contacted Waiters behind the residences in the wood line. While arresting and hand cuffing Waiters, Waiters grabbed the officer's service weapon and a fight over the weapon ensued. During the struggle, our officer discharged his service weapon mortally wounding Waiters."

Marcus Coleman, a spokesman for Waiters' family, said police intimidated eye-witnesses, many of them minors.

"There are a number of issues, not just with the shooting, but actual intimidation of witnesses. The shooter in question was allowed to go into the interrogation room, and one of the witnesses had a visit on the job from a Union City police officer," said Coleman.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation completed its investigation and turned over its findings to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office for review.

Supporters of Waiters plan to hold a rally at 6 PM Tuesday in front of Union City City Hall.
