School Choice Rally to be held Wednesday morning

Posted: Updated:

More than 1,500 school choice supporters will gather on the steps of the Georgia State Capitol Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the third annual School Choice Rally.

The rally is being held to urge lawmakers to support the expansion of school choice options in Georgia.

Supporters of public charter schools, private school scholarships, online education, hybrid schools, homeschools, and public schools will be in attendance.

The state currently has two private school choice programs, the Georgia Special Needs Scholarship and the Tax Credit Scholarship, that together serve over 10,000 students.

State Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers and Representative Alicia Thomas Morgan will be speaking.

"Georgia ranks near the bottom nationally in most measures of K-12 academic achievement and in high school graduation rates," said Jerri Nims Rooker, a lawyer and director of the Center for an Educated Georgia at Georgia Family Council. "We can turn around Georgia's poor academic performance by making sure that all families in Georgia can choose a school that provides the quality education their child deserves. Every child is different, so families need a variety of educational options."

Parents, students, and teachers plan to meet with their legislators after the rally to share how school choice impacts their lives.

The rally is hosted by the Center for an Educated Georgia in partnership with over a dozen education choice and reform organizations.
