Mableton neighbors making a stink over garbage transfer station

Posted: Updated:

People living in one Mableton neighborhood say something stinks about a proposed new garbage transfer station.

The Bankhead Transfer Station wants to expand operations and allow household trash to be sorted at their facility.

But folks living nearby are taking their fight to the county commission. The property zoning currently allows them to collect and redistribute tons of construction debris, but they're asking the county to rezone the property to allow household garbage – and some folks living nearby say that stinks.

"If I'm driving around and I'm a potential business owner or homeowner, and all I see are trash trucks coming out of the property, that's not an enticing are for me to go into," said neighbor J.R. White. "I don't mind it being construction waste, but I don't want the rodents, I don't want the bugs, I don't want the smell."

Neighbors also worry about increased truck traffic in the area and how that might affect property values.

"With a garbage transfer station so close, my property values are going to drop even more," said neighbor Leanne Ashurst. "It shouldn't be there, it's too close to residential, it should be somewhere where it's strictly industrial where there's nothing else around."

The fight isn't over just yet. The Cobb County Commission will hold a hearing on Feb. 21, and neighbors plan to pack that meeting.
