DeKalb County teacher accused of raping student

Posted: Updated:

A DeKalb County teacher was arrested and accused of raping a teenage student.

Almarcus Thomas, a math teacher at Tucker Middle School, reportedly had sex several times last year with the 15-year-old girl, police said.

Last December, an angry parent called the board of education and told them his daughter was raped by a teacher.

DeKalb County schools immediately placed Thomas on administrative leave.

"These are just allegations at this point," said Walter Woods, a spokesman for DeKalb County schools. "But we have to act on the side of the children and make sure the children are safe."

Police arrested Thomas on Tuesday. Investigators found nude pictures of the girl on Thomas' computer, said Mekka Parish, a spokeswoman for DeKalb County Police.

Thomas, who appeared before a judge Thursday afternoon, is being held without bond.

Stacy Nash, whose daughter and son are in the eighth-grade at Tucker, struggled to accept that her daughter's favorite teacher was accused of having sex with a student. Nash said her daughter never had any problems with Thomas, but Nash now worries about the safety of both of her children.

"It's very disturbing to hear," Nash said. "He was always a nice gentleman to her."

Thomas is charged with sexually exploiting a child, statutory rape and child molestation. He is scheduled to appear in court again on March 20.
