Sunday alcohol sales expand to new cities in north Georgia

Posted: Updated:

Package stores in several cities across north Georgia began selling alcohol for the first time on Sunday, over the weekend of March 16-18. This, after voters in Cumming, Austell, Marietta, Powder Springs, and other areas gave their approval on the issue on Super Tuesday.

"It is what it is," said store manager Chris Terrell, in Cumming. "It needed to happen."

"Your costs do go up, you have to pay me to be here today, you have to pay (my two employees) to be here today," said manager Andrew Nall, at the Capital City Package Store in Atlanta.

His concerns three months ago are the same Terrell has today: that the cost of operating for an extra day a week will not make being open on Sunday worth it.

However, Nall said the results have turned out better than he expected, since they began Sunday operations in early January.

"This neighborhood has supported it very well," he said. "Super Bowl Sunday was crazy in here, as busy as any Saturday we've ever had. The bottom line is we're making more money than we were."
