Atlanta investigators arrested an 18-year-old for the deadly shooting of a toddler in southwest Atlanta.

Larenzo Montgomery was charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.

"He really loved her, you know. He didn't do anything to intentionally to hurt her so I know he's hurting over her. It was an accident. It was an accident," said the suspect's father, Malcolm Montgomery.

Malcolm Montgomery said his son is the uncle of 3-year-old Takira Garlington.

The shooting happened at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at a townhouse in the 3200 block of Cushman Circle.

Kevin Muckle, a neighbor, said he heard a boom and then saw the child's mother run outside yelling, "Call 911," and "It was an accident."

Police said Larenzo Montgomery was at the town home on Wednesday. They believe he was holding the handgun when it accidentally went off, shooting Takira in the stomach.

"It is our belief based on the evidence on scene, forensic evidence on scene and witness testimony that he fired the weapon which actually struck and killed the child," said Lt. Paul Guerrecci with Atlanta Police.

Malcolm Montgomery said his son was visiting family when the accident happened. He said he's a good kid.

"He loves rapping, he has a studio. He's either at the studio or at work. I mean he's not a bad kid, he's a great kid," Malcolm Montgomery said.

Police are still waiting on a report to find out who the gun is registered to.

Larenzo Montgomery was denied bond Thursday morning. His next court date is April 12.
