Atlanta police crackdown on prostitution in Midtown

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Atlanta police cracked down on prostitution in Midtown on Friday and Saturday night. Police said 30 officers were involved in the sting operation.

"Downtown has seen this problem for many, many years. It's a challenge for the residents, it's a challenge for police officers that work in vice and Zone 5 to curb it and control it as much as possible. We really want to have an effect on the quality of life on the residents who live down here," said Lt.  Scott Kreher, with the Atlanta Police Department. "People think that prostitution is kind of a victimless crime and it's really not. There are a lot of other property and violent crimes that come along with prostitution."

The exact number of people arrested was not immediately available, but investigators said those arrested would not be going home right away.

"They will face a judge tomorrow for a bond hearing or they will go ahead and see a judge Monday or Tuesday," Kreher said.

Kreher said those convicted will face jail time.

"What we like about the city ordinance is it is mandatory sentencing. For a first offense it is 15 days, second offense 50 days and then the third offense is 180 days," Kreher said.
