Atlanta developer offers MARTA space at video lottery resort

Posted: Updated:

Atlanta developer Dan O'Leary said he will offer 9 acres of land to Gwinnett County to help with future transportation projects, as long as his proposed video lottery gaming site is allowed to move forward. Any such development would need to be approved by the Georgia Lottery Board.

"I've been working on this project eight years, full time," said O'Leary, who has property under contract, adjacent to the OFS Fiberoptics plant off Jimmy Carter Boulevard at Interstate 85. His proposed project would make use of the fiberoptics company's unused buildings and would feature a resort, restaurant, shopping, theater and video lottery machines, giving a Las Vegas gambling feel.

"Hopefully we'll get the approval to build an incredible mixed use facility here," he said. O'Leary hopes his offer of 9 acres to Gwinnett County will help sweeten the deal. There has been talk of expanding MARTA into Gwinnett, and O'Leary said his property would have plenty of space for such an expansion.

Thursday is a significant day in the process. The Georgia Lottery Board will hear O'Leary's presentation and will have to give their approval if the project is to move forward. O'Leary said he does not expect the board to make a decision following the first hearing.
